Happy New Year yall! So sorry for not posting lately... I was completely swamped with orders in December so I was busy sewing and shipping! :)

Just want to thank you all for the support this past year! 2011 was amazing and I'm eagerly looking forward to all that 2012 has in store! I have tons of things on my list to do this year and I intend to complete every single one God willing!

Christmas Dinner Party

A few weeks ago before Christmas, my hubby and I hosted a small dinner party with a few friends at home. Because I was sooo busy with orders in December, I didn't have much time to get it all together but I think it came out pretty good despite that and everyone had a great time so that's all that really matters!

Check out these pretty candlesticks I got from Home Goods for only $7.99 a piece!

Here is the table setting I did. I used a regular 6 foot folding table and covered it with a white tablecloth. I purchased some sequin fabric for the overlay, then did my place setting. I used folding chairs and covered them with stretch chair covers. Check it out!

I purchased the ornament that is placed on each napkin from the Dollar Tree!

Toy Chest Tutorial - Great Baby Shower Gift!

One great gift idea for a baby shower is a custom wood toy chest! I decided to do one for my bf's baby shower. First thing you have to do is buy a wood toy chest. I was surprised at the cost of them. Unfortunately, they aren't cheap. Depending on the size you get, real wood chests can be pricey. The one I purchased shown below is pine and its about 35 inches wide. I got it on sale for $155 but you may be able to find one a little cheaper. I researched online and saw prices that ranged from $100 and up for the size I got but if you have to have it shipped, that could increase the cost a lot since its heavy OR if you are handy, you can build one. I would have LOVED to build one myself but clearly I'm no carpenter...lol

Next you have to removed the hinges so you can take the lid off. Then I primed the whole box and lid. Dont skip this step, the primer helps your paint adhere better. As you can see, I was working on a lot of things while working on the chest lol

I painted the box white and chose to go with a striped design on the front of chest. I had a few other ideas in my head initially but they didn't quite work out. So this is how it came out after painting:

Once everything dries, attach the lid back on the chest.

Next its time make the cushion. First you have to purchase foam from your local fabric store. I got 2 inch thick foam for my cushion. Its about $30 a yard and I needed a yard. Luckily I had a 40% off coupon at Joanns. Next I measured the size I needed for the cushion and used an electric knife to cut it. You CAN NOT cut this foam with a pair of scissors so don't bother trying.

Since this was my first time making this type of cushion cover, I completely forgot to take pics of how I made the cover :( But here is how it looked once I was done! It wasn't perfect but not bad for my first time. And the great part is it can be used with or without the cushion. I also got the material for the cover from Joann's. It was $26 a yd. And the cushion cover is removable and washable.

Lastly, time to customize with the child's name. I painted letters and attached with a hot glue gun.

Walah!! All done! :) It takes some time to complete this project but its worth it for the outcome! Don't you agree? :)

And remember when I did this one for another one of my friends? This chest is a lot smaller. Its from Micheal's and was only $50 but again its wayyy smaller. But you can use a Michaels coupon to buy this so that's a steal!

Great Treat for the Holidays!

One of my besties, Karee, is an aspiring caterer and loves to cook! Whenever I have a food related question, she is one of the first people I call. Last year she gave me a great and SIMPLE (my fav kind of recipes...lol) recipe for Chocolate Covered Peanut Clusters. Who knew these great treats were so simple to make! :) They are also great to give as little gifts for Christmas. I made a bunch last year and put them in Christmas tins and gave them away. And everyone LOVES them! My husbands barber even told him I should start selling them! LOL
But of course, I have no intentions of doing that. My dad and father in law also love these babies!

This years I am also going to make Pecan Millionaires. Not sure how those will turn out so I'll wait until I try them before I share!

So for those of you interested, here is the scoop on the best chocolate covered peanut clusters you've ever tasted! :)

INGREDIENTS
1- 12z bag of Semi-Sweet chocolate chips
1- 12z bag of Milk Chocolate chips
2- 12z bags of White Chocolate chips
2- 16z jar of Planters Lightly Salted roasted peanuts
Wax or Parchment paper

DIRECTIONS
1. Get all your ingredients together:

2. Get a large pot and pour the Semi Sweet Chocolate and Milk Chocolate in. Turn the stove on low to medium heat. You don't want it too hot because it'll burn the chocolate.

3. Slowly stir it as the chips melt down. After they have melted down a little, add in your 2 bags of white chocolate and do the same ... slowly stirring as they melt down.

4. Continue stirring until you get a smooth consistency like this:

5. Now its time to add your peanuts in. Pour the jars of peanuts in the chocolate. You don't have to use 2 jars if you don't want to.

6. After you pour peanuts in, stir them all together. Then take 2 spoons and take out clusters of the mix and place on parchment paper or wax paper. Do this until the mix is gone and let sit in a cool area for about 4 hours to harden, then refrigerate in an airtight container and they are done! Easy peezy, right?! Enjoy! :)

I recently got a sample of this Lancome product when I purchased some new pressed powder from them. I'm always looking for good eye creams because outside of being in my 30s now, I have natural bags under my eyes anyway so eye creams are a must for me. I didn't know what to expect but this product is amazing! Ive only been using it a few days so far and I can already see the results! I wondered what others had to say about it so I checked out some reviews online and it looks like everyone loves this stuff! So I'm going to try to stretch my sample out for awhile but I definitely plan to purchase this once its gone. Of course it is a lil on the pricey side.... a small container is almost $60. But I definitely think its worth it!

80s Themed Party - PICS

So as yall know, I planned a small 30th birthday shin dig for my hubby with a hip hop 80s theme. I only had 2 weeks and a thousand other things on my plate but I managed to come up with some cute touches for the 80s themed party. I feel like there was more I could have done but time just didn't allow but overall I was happy with the outcome! We had about 25 guests. The menu included chicken wings, mac & cheese, yellow rice, mini egg rolls, meatballs, pulled pork, collard greens, vegetable stir fry, pasta salad, Rotel dip, & chips. Desserts included cake, brownies, sugar cookies, and candy! Check out some of the pics from it!

This is the desert table. I wrapped boxes with black wrapping paper along with black glitter ribbon and created signs for everything using a graffiti font to tie in with the 80s theme!

I got my friend Kendra of Keshajo Bakes to do the cake toppers. I wanted her to do the whole cake but she lives in VA and I live in PA and I didnt have time to go down just to get the cake...so I ordered a plain cake from Sam's Club (who's cakes I LOVE) and she made the edible toppers and mailed them to me. I just placed them on top...and it worked out perfectly!! :)

So as an alternate to an entire candy buffet, I chose to do a candy plate! Its much cheaper and still showcases some of the candy that was popular in the 80s. People still didn't even take it all.

For the food labels, I printed out pics of 80s groups/tv shows and made tents out of them.

Remember those old records I got from thrift store? Well this is what I did with them.

This is the centerpiece I created for the table. I was looking for a real boombox but couldn't find one so I printed a boombox I found on the internet and glued it to a small box to give it a mini boombox effect sitting on top. Then I glued the cassette tapes I got from the thrift store on top!

Birthday Boy

Not pictured....I rented two tall cocktail tables and also had balloons hanging all around the ceiling. I also had an 80s trivia game I created and a prize for the winner. We played 80s music of course and had School Daze playing on the tv. If time permitted, I would have loved to get a lifesize version of Salt n Pepa or Run DMC. I also looked into renting an old school video game like Pac Man...like what you see in an arcade but they are quite pricey! In addition, I tried to find an Atari to hook up...but no luck on that one either. Surprisingly there aren't many blogs or sites that give good pics and examples to draw inspiration from for a 80s hip hop themed party.

9/11 10 Year Anniversary

I still remember exactly where I was on 9/11/2001...I was in my car heading to class at VCU listening to the Russ Parr show and they announced what had just happened. It was a day I don't think any American will ever forget. It was also a day that reminded us that we are not exempt from experiencing a strike of that magnitude on our own soil. Today marks the 10 year anniversary of that tragic day in our beloved country and my heart truly goes out to all the people who lost loved ones.

On this day, I pray that the Lord continues to comfort and cover them all with the peace that surpasses all understanding. And I pray that the Lord keeps a hedge of protection around us all as well.

80's Themed Party for Hubby

In two weeks, my hubby turns the BIG 3-0...and we just decided to do a little something for his big day. We are having a small get together and of course we needed a theme so he decided on an 80s theme for it.

Since I only have two weeks and don't have much time to pull things together for this shin dig, I have to think fast about how Im going to decorate! I went by the thrift store today and picked up some old vinyl records and cassette tapes...see below:

I'm not quite sure yet how I will incorporate these but they were only $0.50 a piece so once I figure out my plan, I may go back for more. Just got a couple for now to play around with some ideas. Stay tuned!

I want to make a dress!

So I have been wanting to make a dress for quite awhile but I'm kinda scared. I have never done a dress before and I dont know if I should try! LOL ... But knowing me...the bug wont go away until I attempt it. I think I found some material I may like for a dress...its a jersey stretch material and I love the tribal print on it. I have alot of ideas in my head..esp if I can find a print for an accent on the dress....not sure if I'll be able to execute my ideas the way I'd like but we shall see.....

I'm hoping to have time to try to make something with this material and maybe I could end up wearing it somewhere this month if it ends up looking ok...lol... Stay tuned....

I kept the current set up the same for the furniture because it was the most optimal use of the small space. The client/mother wanted something very girly. She purchased a new comforter set for her daughter and I decorated around that.

We decided to do an accent wall behind the bed with wallpaper. This was my first time putting up wallpaper. I used a print from the Easy Wall collection at Sherwin Williams. It was pretty simple to put up....matching the designs to get a seamless look can get a little tricky..even with the marks that help you.

I also made a custom valance..my first time doing this type of valance. And you guys remember the matching ottoman I reupholstered awhile ago.

Overall, everything turned out great and my clients and their daughter loved it! The mother even shed a few tears! :)

Thrift Store Chair Redo- Finally FINISHED!

So you guys remember this old ugly chair I got from the thrift store right?

This chair was the first of this style I have ever revamped....so I was definitely up for the challenge! Not only did it have an upholstered front and back, the cushions were tufted too. It was quite fun taking it all apart and redoing it. I have all intentions of doing a tutorial on how I did this revamp but I will have to post that later because trying to figure out how to explain everything in writing takes a long time...lol. So check out how it all came together!

Had to strip it all down. Then I sanded it really well and spray painted it silver. This chair has been thru it in its former life....so I couldn't sand all the knicks out of it...and the paint actually highlighted all the imperfections even more...but I guess it gives it a little character..lol

This one took me awhile to complete but I'm quite proud of my work since this was my first time attempted this style! This beauty will be in my office. Next project is to make a matching side table! Stay tuned for that and the tutorial! :)

My DIY Baby Shower Gift: Personalized Chest

Yesterday I attended one of my friends baby shower. For her gift, I decided to do a personalized wood chest. She mentioned the colors of the babys room would be light green and light blue so I made sure I stayed in that color scheme. Also, the theme for Jaden (her baby son on the way) would be royalty so everyone has been calling him Prince Jaden. I decided to play off of that. I purchased a wood chest from Michaels. Regular price is $50 but of course Michaels always has a coupon around somewhere. Then I purchased the letters and other supplies and got to work. Check out the before and after!

We ended up connecting and once we met up, we instantly clicked and became friends! We both love home decor and making things. Trust me, compared to what you would pay at a ritzy furniture store, her prices are a steal! She can customize it to whatever you want. Latest Thrift Store Find & my DREAM Furniture!

I came up on a great chair today at my fav thrift store for $15. This will be the first chair of this style I will be doing so this should be interesting! Stay tuned for how I revamp it!

And this past weekend, while visiting my friends in MD, we stopped by this great furniture auction store. I was stopped in my tracks when I saw these pieces of furniture! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE these in my office .....with a different fabric though. Check them out! HOT!! Bidding starts at $400 for the chair and a lil less for the one seater! This is definitely the type of furniture I dream about and love! :)

My Experience at Project Accessory Casting - NY

So on this past Saturday, I went to the casting for Lifetime's spinoff to Project Runway, Project Accessory! Although, I've never had dreams of being on tv let alone a competition show, I figured ...hey this is the year of stepping out on faith and living fearlessly in the pursuit of my dreams so the least I could do was try, right? The worse thing they could say is NO. I woke up at 4am ...drove from Philly to NY. I got there around 6:30am and expected the line to already be around the building... but there were no large crowds...just a few people standing in line. I was #4. By the time everything started around 9am, to my surprise there was still no large crowd of people in line. It may have been about 35-40 people or so.

One of the production crew starts handing out wrist bands, then we were allowed to go in the building...a few at a time. We head up to the 4th floor and check in at a table where they ask you a few questions. The woman who handled me was sooo nice! She was really hype and enthusiastic which was encouraging. Next we go down to the waiting area next to the room where the casting/auditions actually take place.

While waiting, we got to talk to the other hopefuls....check out each others work and try to get rid of any nerves we had. The first girl who went into the room with the judges looked like a split image of Rachel Zoe and she was decked out in a black dress & stilettos. She came with bags, shoes, and jewelry she designed along with 2 bags full of huge portfolios. We all kinda figured she was a shoe in ....and sure enough she came out with an envelope. Basically its just like American Idol...you either get a envelope/yellow paper (IDOL) or you don't.

So finally my turn comes, I was really nervous...but once I walked in I just started talking. They really liked my work but because I only brought one thing and one style...they told me they couldn't cast me just on that and needed to see some more of what I could do. I kinda assummed before going they probably wanted people who did a lil bit of everything ...shoes, bags, jewelry etc... but since they didn't state that it was a requirement in the application, I figured I'd try. But turns out, they are looking for people who do a lil bit of everything (at least that's how it seemed to me) which makes total sense for a show like that. Alot of people came with only one thing...either they did jewelry, shoes or bags...so I guess if we all knew they really seemed to have wanted a combination of everything, it would have eliminated a lot of people from even trying . They did give the bags I brought wonderful compliments and told me they would definitely rock them so that was nice to hear! :)

So no reality tv for me but I'm totally glad I went! It was a really cool experience and I am perfectly fine with not making it. It will be great to see who they end up casting and what everyone does. The GREAT thing though is one of my friends made it to the 2nd round!! So I'll be rooting for him hoping he makes the actual show...which I think he will!! Either way, I'll be watching it...cant wait!! :)

LESSON FROM EXPERIENCE:
Never get discouraged in the NOs of life.... a YES could be just around the corner!

So sorry for not getting these up last week. I have been super busy. Just had a really great meeting yesterday with a potential client to redo his office/library...will keep ya posted on how that goes! Anywho, so here are the pictures of my office. I think it turned out good...there are a few more touches I want to put on it but for the most part its done! So let me know what you think!

Since its a small space, I chose to do horizontal stripes on the wall behind my desk to make the room appear wider. My printer is behind one side of the curtains and I will put a mini fridge and microwave behind the other side!

I got this mirror from Homes Goods for $30 then added the nail heads around it and my logo in the center.

This is my main work area where all the "magic" happens...lol


I got a wall decal with one of my favorite scriptures on it... "Faith without works is dead" James 2:20. It basically just means that just having faith alone is worthless...you have to do your part as well and put some work in. From there, you leave the rest to the Lord.

I keep all my fabric and leather in this storage unit


This is my DREAM Big wall.... I am BIG on writing things down and putting your dreams in the atmosphere. I still have a little more to add to this wall..but this is the starting point.

Overall, my design came out exactly as I envisioned it....and I love working in the space...which is the most important thing! :)

When did you discover your passion for makeup?

I discovered my passion for makeup after college. However I was always interested in color. As a child,I used to draw and play with crayons. As a teen, I would do my nails and my friends' nails. I still get excited when I see colors in any form: sunsets,flowers,makeup colors,nail polishes,handbags,etc.

What career field were you in before stepping out to start your own business?

I was a performing artist-dancer/actress, before I started to do makeup as a profession. I was working at a makeup counter in a department store prior to starting Fairweather Faces.

What was your "breaking point" when you knew it was time for you to do your own thing?

The 'breaking point' that moved me to start Fairweather Faces came in the form of frustration. I was tired of having my ideas used and not receiving any compensation or credit. I was also disgusted with the prejudices within the industry. Often times, women of color do not get their fair share of compensation nor accolades within the beauty world. I just had enough and felt it was time to step out on faith and move in the direction God was leading me.

What has been one challenge in stepping out and running your own business?

One challenge I have faced in running my own business is creating a balance to please others. The challenge to take care of the clients and my artists was constantly on my mind where I just could not allow myself to relax. It was difficult.

What has been the best part?

The best part of owning Fairweather Faces has been to witness the beautiful transformations of the clients and the growth of the artists. It is a priceless experience when you have made another happy because they look and feel beautiful.

What advice would you give others ready to step out? And specifically those who are interested in becoming a celebrity makeup artist?

The advice I can give to anyone who is ready to step out in their respective field would be to have a strong relationship with God. It is vital to be able to carry out one's purpose in life, have peace and guidance along the way and have a refuge to heal. The best decisions I have ever made came directly through prayer and meditating on God's Word. I have seen the power of it and witnessed my dreams (which I thought at times were impossible) become possible because of my faith in God.

My advice to those who are interested in becoming celebrity makeup artists is you must develop a thick skin. It is never about you. It is always about the client. It is a profession of service.Your talent can make or break their image. Therefore you must stay current and strive to always give your best. The talent is in your hands.

When did you discover your passion for baking?

I've been baking since I was a kid with my grandmother which is who the business is named after, Ilene Miriam Warren. She taught me how to bake from scratch, so Ilene Miriam Pastry Studio has that homemade taste that most franchised bakeries lack. At the same time, customized designs from popular children's characters to leading fashion inspired items, take your sweets to another level. When you get an Ilene Miriam product, you know it's going to taste as good as it looks.

What career field were you in before stepping out to start your own business?

I have a fashion background. I'm an FIT Graduate (FMM Major) and have worked as a fashion stylist and as an assistant brand manager for luxury brands previously. Surprisingly, my most recent job was in the Accounting field.

What was your "breaking point" when you knew it was time for you to do your own thing?

One day, I posted a picture of some Chanel inspired cupcakes on Facebook and the response was amazing. That's when I realized that I actually had a good thing going.

What has been one challenge in stepping out and running your own business?
My biggest challenge was growing the business while still maintaining a full time job and raising my one year old daughter. Juggling many things at once leads to a lot of sleepless nights but my eye is always on the big picture.

What has been the best part?

The best part is being able to express my creativity. Its exciting to get requests for unique ideas. I enjoy the challenge and put my personal touch on each order. I.M. allows me to also extend the opportunity to other creative women. The business has grown to the point where I can assemble a team. Jo-Laine Duke Collins, a phenomenal Event Designer and Aja Whitaker, a talented up and coming pastry designer. Great women who are talented, dedicated and driven!

What advice would you give others ready to step out?

Have faith in yourself, your team and your products/services. Its also important to have a great support system. Keeping positive people in your circle will allow you to deal with the many highs and lows of starting a business. A strong team is crucial in small start up businesses. Each member has a specific piece of the puzzle to cover. Collectively, we perform as a complete finished product. Lastly, it's important to stay drama free. There are times where your limits will be tested but if you stay true to yourself, everything will fall into place.

My Thrift Store Find for $3.98

So the other day while driving past my fav thrift store, I noticed a chair sitting outside. Now I had no intention on going to the store that day but they sit alot of the furniture on sidewalk ...prob to bring people in ...and the detail on this chair back caught my eye. I instantly envisioned a color to paint it! It was $5 and the whole store was 25% off that day! So I got this beauty for $3.98...cant beat that with a bat! Stay tuned to see how I re-do this one!

My Zebra Print Wall for Office

So after debating for quite awhile about what to do with the back wall in my office, I decided to go with a zebra print. Originally, I actually wanted to use a wall stencil for this really nice Moroccan print I found online....but it didn't necessarily go with my look. But I plan to incorporate that somewhere one day because I really do love it!! Anywho, back to the zebra print walls. They also sell wall stencils for zebra print but I couldn't find a style I liked ..not to mention, some wall stencils surprisingly can get pretty pricey. The Moroccan one I really like was $55 for the stencil. So since I'm a DIY'er... I figured I could just freehand it myself ... and it came out pretty good I think.

I started off sketching the zebra stripes on the wall but ended up free-handing the rest. Zebra stripes are one of the easiest things to do because they don't have to be perfect to look good!

My Mom's 60th Birthday

My mom back in the day

So this past weekend was my mom's birthday and I put together a very small surprise gathering at a restaurant. I think she had a hunch that I was planning something but nevertheless, it turned out great! She had a blast!

I got my good friend Kendra of Keshajo Bakes to make the cake. This is my friend who was on TLC's Next Great Baker reality show. She does really awesome work and you guys didn't even get a taste on the show of what she is really capable of doing! I told her my mom loves to sing. She's been in numerous bands when she was younger but now she sings in the church choir so I wanted something with music notes and a microphone. So this is what she came up with:

I also put together some little favor bags which included some of my mom's favorite snacks. I decided to use a throwback picture for the bag label. Check it out:
